To: All Elks
From: Steve Vartanian, Hoop Shoot Chairman
Please invite all young people you know to our annual Hoop Shoot contest.
They must fall in one of the following age groups to participate (boys and
girls ages 8-9, 10-11 & 12-13; their age as of April 1, 2012). This is an
Elk sponsored event.
At our contest the young people will shoot the best of 25 free throws (10
in the first round and 15 in the second round). Boys ages 8-9 and all girls
will use a regulation girl’s basketball. Boys ages 10-11 & 12-13 will use
a regulation men’s basketball. I will provide the basketballs. They need
to bring a copy of their birth certificate.
Our event will be Saturday, December 10 at Fullerton College Woman’s Gym
(south gym) which is closer to Chapman and the tennis courts. Ages 8-9
will shoot at 9:30 AM., ages 10-11 will shoot at 10:15 AM. & ages 12-13
will shoot at 11:15 AM.
Please keep in mind that the spirit of this contest is to build self-esteem
through basketball while reminding our young people to be 100% drug free.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 714-390-0671 or e-mail me
at vartanian1@aol.com.
P.S. Please note that the college is located at the northwest corner of
Chapman and Lemon.

Previously:
On Saturday February 5, 2011 our lodge sent two Orange Coast District Hoop
Shoot winners to the Southern California Regional Hoop Shoot contest in Corona.
Jianna Edwards shot the best out of 25 free
throws in the 8-9 year old age
group.
She made 12/25 and won fourth place.
Katie Lou Samuelson, a former
champion for us, broke another bone in her right hand a few days before the
shoot. Her dad, Jon, called me to let me know that she would shoot left
handed even though she is right handed. She won the 12-13 age group by
making 17/25 again left handed. When Katie Lou's score was compared to the
Northern California/Hawaii score she placed second in the state.
This is the
last year that the Samuelson ladies will be able to compete for us. Thank you
Jon and Karen (Dad and Mom), Bonnie (two time National Champion who just signed
a full ride to play basketball for Stanford), Karlie (two time National
Champion who made a perfect score at Nationals, 25/25 and is being recruited
by Texas) and Katie Lou Samuelson who has won many contests for us. Our
shoot will not be the same without a Samuelson in it.
Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors,
and of course the members for
sponsoring Hoop Shoot.
Yours in Elkdom,

"Yes to Hoop Shoot and No to Drugs"
2010 RESULTS:
Our annual Hoop Shoot event was held on Saturday, December 11 at
Fullerton College. We had 30 boys and girls ages 8-13 compete in
the best out of 25 free throws. This is the highest attendance
since 2000. For the past two years we have teamed up with
Fullerton and Placentia NJB programs as well as Rolling Hills
Elementary in Fullerton. Our lodge provides scholarships for
financially disadvantaged youth so they can join the NJB programs.
Our lodge also donates an honorarium to Rolling Hills Elementary.
On Thursday, December 9, I hosted 5th and 6th graders to a Hoop
Shoot contest in the school yard. It was a beautiful day and I
had a blast with the kids.
Thank you to our awesome volunteers in no particular order:
PER Dan Casey, Lodge Secretary Bob Ziebell, Irishman Brian Hogan,
Buffalo fan Dennis Schul, State Vice President and PER Mike Mathers,
Bugle Editor and Lodge Photographer Richard Green, PER Dick Moore,
Nayan Lamitz (she donated the Powerade), Esther's Taco House for
allowing us to have our flyers in their restaurant, East Lake
Village and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church for promoting our event,
the Register for fine coverage and Texas' #1 fan Steve Vartanian.
Please remember our Motto is "Yes to Hoop Shoot and No to Drugs!"
